  • Cohesion - This refers to what specific factors and determinants relate to an individual's or a team's performances. Essentially, cohesion refers to the specific reasons for an individual's or a team's performance. Did the basketball star have an off game because of problems at home or was he just fatigued from the long road trip. As a sports psychologist, you will be able to find out and know why.
  • Imagery - Imagery refers to being able to use your imagination to improve your performance. If you picture the ball going through the basket, you already have a much better chance of the ball going through the basket than you did previously.
  • Attention Focus - Attention focus means being able to completely and totally block out any potential negativity from your mind in a pressure filled situation. The best athletes are able to completely obstruct the crowd and their negative feedback from their mind in a tense situation. During a free throw, if you do not recognize the crowd as even existing, you are much more likely to make the shot than you would be if you were listening to them.
  • Motivation - A degree in sports psychology will show you the differences between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation concerns external factors like money and fame. Intrinsic motivation refers to inner self-motivation or the idea of being able to accomplish something as a reward in and of itself.

A sports psychology degree will also help lead you on a path that will teach you the tools and practices necessary to help an individual or a team achieve its goals. New techniques are invented almost daily to help the sports psychologist help the athlete to perform at his or her highest possible level. Some of these techniques include:

  • Goal Setting- Goal setting is one of the most important and time-tested methods that the sports psychologist may employ to help the athlete to do their best. An athlete must set realistic and achievable goals but at the same time they must set goals that pose a real test and challenge to themselves in order to make sure that improvement is apparent and real. Sports psychologists help to make sure that the athletes find the perfect balance.
  • Relaxation- A person or athlete who is relaxed and calm in pressure situations is much more likely to achieve his or her goal that they have set. With a degree in sports psychology you will be able to better assist athletes and individuals who wish to improve their performance. Relaxation is a key component to success.
  • Visualization- In order for an athlete to succeed and be competitive they must first believe that they are able to conquer and exceed any and all goals that they may have set for themselves. If you utilize the technique of visualization these goals will be much easier to achieve. With a degree in sports psychology you will be able to show athletes the best possible way to visualize their successes.
  • Self-Talk Awareness- The idea of self-talk awareness ties in closely with confidence. A valuable tool for athletes is a high confidence level. Athletes who self-talk or tell themselves that they will be able to accomplish what they have set their minds to usually have a much higher confidence level than the athlete who does not take part in self-talk. Sports psychologists know the ins and outs of self-talk and are able to cater and tend to a certain individual to show them, the best route of self-talk possible for them.
  • Concentration- Concentration is obviously a big part of life and a necessary skill to excel in the athletic field. The golfer who is more focused on the cup is much more likely to sink their shot as opposed to the golfer who is focused on something else. Using rituals allows the athlete to focus and get his mind set at exactly the right moment. After the batter knocks the dirt off three times, he is ready to swing. After the basketball player goes through his motions at the line, he is ready to shoot. The sports psychologist will help to make use of certain rituals to improve performance.
  • Attribution Training- Attribution training is getting someone used to a situation through repetition. A sports psychologist might make a hockey player skate at the goal at top speed over a hundred times.
